John Lifongo Vetinde was born of the 24th December 1955 in Victoria (now known as Limbe), Southwest Province, Cameroon. His father was Mr Augustine Vetinde and his mother was Agnes Losenja Gbwai Molongo. His mother was a descendant of the Wosingi Superclan that spreads from the three Bonjongos, Mapanja, Mokunda, Bwando, Botha Land, Wovea and many others. He was therefore a Mombamba of the Wosingi Superclan.
After completing his primary school education, he was admitted at St Paul’s Teachers Training College (SPTTC) in Bonjongo in 1969 where he spent five years and qualified as a Grade II Teacher in 1974 even before he attained his 19th birthday.
John Lifongo Vetinde then pursued his doctorate degree in French Language at Culture at the University of Oregon and a Post Doctorate focused on French Literature at Kansas State University. He went on to become a full Professor at Lawrence University where he taught for the subsequent 25 years. Professor Vetinde started the student exchange program at Gaston Berger University in Senegal and Lawrence University and was distinguished as a Fulbright Fellow by the United States Department of State in 2013.
Professor Vetinde was the President and Chair of the Board of Trustees of Fako Development Organisation (FADO), which is dedicated to the improvement of life of the people of Fako Division, South West Region in Cameroon in the areas of Education, Health, Economic Development, Information Technology and Recreation. He was a fundamental Christian with strong Catholic views and never at any point in time compromised his beliefs. Professor Vetinde passed away on January 30, 2020 due to complications from a liver transplant.
